Amazon's New World is certainly accustomed to players discovering exploits to amass additional gold, but yesterday the MMO took things to a whole new level by inadvertently handing out chestfuls of gold to a select few players.
Since its release in September of this year, New World has felt like it has been cursed. The number of times Amazon has to undo some sort of disaster seems to increase on a weekly basis, according to the company. Usually, it has something to do with the game's complicated economy and the cunning players who figure out how to take advantage of the game's numerous teething problems. However, the publisher is solely to blame for the calamity that has befallen the company this week. According to PC Gamer, players on the EU server were treated to a whopping 300,000 New World gold pieces as a thank you for their participation.
In a statement posted to the New World website, a developer by the name of Lane explained what had gone wrong with the game. The problem began when the game attempted to recoup lost taxes for players who had been affected by previous outages, which was done in a gracious manner."Due to an error in the database, very large sums were awarded that were not representative of the intended amounts," Lane explained. According to him, "Many players then spent that money, frequently purchasing large quantities of items from the trading post."This appears to be a reasonable conclusion.
Due to the fact that New World's economy appears to be in such danger, they did not want this recent profligacy to have an adverse effect on their lands, and they determined that the only option was to take the servers offline and then roll back time.
After careful consideration, it became clear that there was no straightforward way to reverse the effects of only the players who had received money, because the secondary effects were widespread and involved many more players and systems. Because of this, we made the decision to roll back all of the characters, companies, and the trading post to 12:45 PM Central European Time (CET), which was just before the database modification was implemented.
Of course, this did not go as smoothly as it could have. The note goes on to say,
It was discovered that a small number of players who transferred between 12:45 PM and 3:00 PM CET are stuck in the "character_restore_failure" state, which we are working on fixing right now. We are aware of the specific players who have been affected and are working to rectify the situation. Once the situation has been resolved, we will post an update here.
The most recent update, which was released yesterday, explained that while they had restored functionality to the rest of the game, all players would awaken with a three-hour amnesia (and significantly smaller bank accounts), the trading posts were still down.
I'm guessing New World's developers aren't having a particularly enjoyable Thanksgiving break because of these issues, which appear to have only affected the "EU Central Region" servers.
